A food donation service designed to sustain and enhance existing cookout activities in Lindängen, Malmö. The service connects local organizations with stores to redistribute food surplus, fostering community engagement and reducing food waste.

Research

The research was initialized by learning more about the neighborhood Lindängen, therefor fieldwork was done in the area to learn more about existing organizations. I interviewed several stakeholders; organizations and residents of Lindängen to learn more about the neighborhood’s practices. Participant observation was done by partaking in the existing events they have. Research shows a strong interest in cooking food and in the practice of food-sharing, especially among women. Several organizations have different types of events around the topic of food, health & sustainability, and food-sharing events.

Several cookout events did not take place due to not being able to buy food for the event, which led to us defining one of their problems; cookouts lack financial support and are forced to minimize the amount of food they cook, limit the amount of ingredients used, or cancel the events altogether.

Desktop research and interviews with the local stores in Lindängen show that they are willing to donate their food surplus, which would be items they do not sell due to being close to the expiry date or damaged.

Insight — There is a strong interest in cooking food and in the practice of food-sharing, especially among women in Lindängen.

Problem — Cookouts lack financial support, and are forced to minimize the amount of food they cook, limit the amount of ingredients used, or cancel the events.

Co-Design

To support cookout activities in Lindängen, we facilitated a co-design workshop with local women involved in these events. Using visual cards and templates featuring a range of ingredients, participants explored their cooking preferences, shared practical challenges, and brainstormed dishes for group settings. It also highlighted the social value of shared cooking, ensuring the solution aligns with the community’s needs and aspirations.
